| 14 Hands
Experience the unbridled freedom and spirit of Washington state …
Our wines are named for the wild mustangs that once roamed the rolling hills rising up from the Columbia River in southeastern Washington state. These horses were small, measuring an average of “14 hands,” but they were some of the strongest and most tenacious horses in the world. Born in the springtime along the river where drifts of rich grass grew in the otherwise dry land, the colts and the herds retreated upward into the hills for cooler temperatures in the summer. Daily they traveled many miles back to the river for water, growing strong as a result of the unique terrain challenge. The herds thrived, and the hills that were their home became known as “Horse Heaven” in the early 1900s. Word spread around the globe about these tough little horses from Washington state.
Today, the conditions that turned a survival challenge into world-renowned character for the wild mustangs have produced a similar tenacity and excellence in the grapevines planted among these hills. The vines struggle to flourish in the loamy-sand and gravel soils encouraging superior fruit development. Winemaker Keith Kenison hand crafts soft reds and fresh, crisp white wines that capture the essence of this unique region.
